As children, we receive a lot of information about charismatic, flagship and key species. These species are often used to attract attention, stimulate conservation and increase political support for conservation issues. As these charismatic species do not in most cases represent the local ecological community, we run the risk that exotic species will be more easily recognized than local species. Given that knowledge is essential in conservation, this could pose a serious problem. Spain is a biodiversity hot-spot; there are many species and many of them are endemic.
What do you think, do you know more exotic species or those of the place where you live?
