All around us is full of life. If we look closely, especially when we are in the countryside, we can see many different species, both plants and animals. And in the ocean? Is there as much life as there is on terrestrial ecosistems?
Life began in the ocean. The Ocean cover most of the Earth’s surface and can be considered the largest ecosystem on the planet. Humans inhabit terrestrial ecosystems, but humanity strongly depends on the physical, chemical, and biological functioning of the marine ecosystem to live. The ocean is an immense source of biodiversity, and even if nowadays we know many marine species, we only know a small, very small part of marine biodiversity; there are studies suggesting a current knowledge of only 5% of marine Biodiversity.
Some of the species live at great depths or are very rare, but other species are really abundant and very easy to see from the coast, by boat or diving at a very shallow depth.
